The mixed multitude stirred ungodly cravings in the hearts of the children of Israel (Num 11: 4). Soon, the true-blooded Jews started questioning why they should live on manna every day. Their discussion centred on how they missed the “good foods of Egypt” which they ate for free (Num. 11: 5). What was really for free? Was it not at the expense of God’s plan for their lives as a nation? Beware of preachers who offer you fun and entertainment (as freedom) in place of true worship of the living God.
Manna was a type of God’s Word in the Old Testament. It is to be gathered and eaten on a daily basis. God was committed to providing it on a daily basis. The same is true concerning the word of God today. The believer is to read the Bible on a daily basis. Supernaturally, manna was a complete food, meaning that it contains all the nutrients that the human body needs for growth and health and for all age groups. It may have appeared ordinary, but there is more to it than meets the eyes. Biblical teachings may appear ordinary, but they are divine.
Beware of mixed multitude whose actions and words raise doubts about the sufficiency of the written word. The Bible does not need to be augmented by the wisdom of this age. On its own, the Bible is all we need. The wisdom of God in it is different from the philosophies and ideologies of our days. It is not just different; it is better. There are preachers who open and read the Bible in their sermons, but they are of the world and not of God. So, be discerning.
Those who craved meat soon had it, but the Bible says: “And he gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul” (Psa. 106: 15). God’s word nourishes the soul and spirit of man. All else are polluted streams that corrupt the hearts of humans. Be sure that you are being fed the truths of the Bible and not the ideas and traditions of men.
One clear sign that you are being fed with biblical truths is that you will have a string craving or desire to imitate Jesus Christ in your everyday. We are created to live by God’s word (Mat. 4: 4).
